Did you know that Asian-American Pacific Islander Month, or AAPI, was annually designated in 1992? This heritage month is a chance to shine a light on the historic achievements and beautiful culture of people of Asian American Pacific Islander descent. Here's a brief history of AAPI month and a few notable achievements of AAPI culture.
When Did The Conversation Start?
The prelude to AAPI month as we know it began in 1977 with legislation proposing the first ten days of May as Asian/Pacific Islander week. While the initial proposal was denied, it was reworked and approved in 1979, making that the first year that Asian/Pacific Heritage appreciation became law. 11 years later, in 1990, the week was expanded into a heritage month and was officially named AAPI - instead of Asian/Pacific Islander - in 2009.
Who is Included in AAPI?
AAPI is a broad term covering anyone who can trace their lineage back to:
China, Japan, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Samoa, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Singapore, and the Philippines, or any other of the 75 countries on the continent of Asia.
